Projects and boards

The home page​

The home page shows the projects you can see. Click a project to open its first board. Projects are grouped like this:

  • My Own: private projects you manage.
  • Team: shared projects you manage.
  • Shared With Me: projects where you're a member of at least one board.
  • Others: shared projects that admins can see without being part of them. Only admins see this group.

Type in Search projects... to find a project by its title. The buttons at the top right change what you see:

  • The eye button shows hidden projects instead of the usual ones. Click it again to go back.
  • The sort button opens Select Order: By default, Alphabetically or By creation time.
  • The last two buttons switch between one grid of all projects and the groups above.

To make a project a favorite, point at it and click the star. Favorites appear in a strip at the top of every page. The star at the top right of the page shows or hides that strip.

Create a project​

You need the Admin or Project owner role. See Roles and permissions.

  1. On the home page, click Create project.
  2. Type a Title and, if you like, a Description.
  3. Click the type button.
  4. Choose Private ("For personal projects.") or Shared ("For team-based projects.").
  5. Click Create project.

Unlock editing​

To change a project's boards or a board's lists, first click the lock icon at the top right of the page. Click it again to lock. You only see the lock if you're allowed to make these changes. Planka locks it again when you go back to the home page, and unlocks it for you in a project that has no boards yet.

Boards​

A project's boards are the tabs along the top. A number on a tab counts your unread notifications on that board.

To add a board, you must manage the project:

  1. Unlock editing.
  2. Click + after the last tab.
  3. Type a Title.
  4. Click Create board.

The new board has no lists yet, and you're its first member, as an Editor. To start from a board exported from Trello, use Import → From Trello before you click Create board.

With editing unlocked, managers can drag the tabs to reorder boards.

Board settings​

With editing unlocked, a manager can click the pencil on a board's tab:

  • General: rename the board. Under Danger Zone, Delete Board deletes it after you type its title.
  • Preferences: choose the Default View (Kanban, Grid or List) and the Default Card Type. You can also turn on Always display card creator, Display card ages or Expand task lists by default.
  • Notifications: send the board's activity to an outside service. See Comments and notifications.

Project settings​

With editing unlocked, a manager can click the pencil next to the project's name at the top left:

  • General: change the title and description. Hide from project list and favorites hides the project for everyone. Delete Project only works after you delete all of its boards.
  • Managers: see Roles and permissions.
  • Background: choose one of the Gradients, or click Uploaded images and then Upload new image.
  • Base Custom Fields: custom field groups that boards and cards in this project can reuse. See Card details.
